The Art of Leather: Wickett & Craig’s Time-Honored Tanning Process

At HideSmiths, we believe that the quality of leather starts with the tanning process, and few do it better than Wickett & Craig. Founded in 1867, Wickett & Craig has perfected the traditional vegetable tanning method, producing some of the finest bridle and harness leathers available today.

The Vegetable Tanning Process

Unlike modern chrome tanning, which relies on chemicals for speed, vegetable tanning is an all-natural, time-intensive process. Wickett & Craig slowly tans hides using tree bark extracts, allowing the leather to develop exceptional durability, rich color, and a natural patina over time.

Here’s a quick look at their process:
Sourcing the Finest Hides – Only premium, full-grain North American hides are selected.
Soaking in Natural Tannins – Hides are submerged in large wooden drums filled with Quebracho, and mimosa bark extracts, slowly absorbing these natural agents over weeks.
Hot Stuffing for Strength – Once tanned, the leather is infused with a proprietary blend of waxes, oils, and tallows, making it supple yet incredibly strong.
Finishing & Drying – The leather is then smoothed, polished, and allowed to dry naturally, enhancing its depth of color and signature feel.

Why Wickett & Craig Leather Stands Out

This method produces leather that is not only rugged and long-lasting but also uniquely beautiful. Over time, Wickett & Craig’s leather develops a rich patina, deepening in character with every use. It’s the perfect foundation for HideSmiths’ handcrafted goods—where quality, tradition, and craftsmanship come together.
